Podcamp 2011
Podcamp London is only a few days away and we are very happy to be able to show people what has been happening with UnLondon and the UnLab over the past year.
2 projects to the UnLab facility have been occupying quite a bit of our time.
First is a Podcast Studio – essentially ‘a room within a room’ that will be soundproofed and allow for an excellent space audio-wise for members to record podcasts.
Second is the setup and fitting out of the maker lab. Benches have been constructed some equipment has been purchased ready for all the make projects members may have. We plan to obtain new equipment as we need it depending on members needs. We also have some long term acquisitions in mind including a makerbot as well as a laser cutter.
Come by the UnLab during the conference and see what’s been happening.
Construction and Cleanup Day
This Saturday marks another milestone in the the UnLab. We will begin construction of the podcast studio and the maker lab area. We will also be doing a general clean up and purge in preparation for PodCamp London.
- Podcast Studio.
The podcast studio will be setup to allow members to record podcasts in a quality environment. We have several microphones and a mixer board that will be available for use, Adam, Bill and Titus have been very busy going over how this is going to be built. - Maker Lab
2 Benches will be constructed for the maker lab. As well tools and equipment are in the process of being obtained including soldering irons, breadboards and other such items. - Equipment purge and cleanup
We will also be doing our semi annual equipment purge. This involves taking unusable electronics and equipment to a local recycling facility. We will keep some spare parts but we have quite a bit of extra equipment taking up usable space.
We invite all UnLab members and others interested in helping to come out to the UnLab on Saturday May 28th from 10am. If you need more information you can email me at stuart (at) unlondon.ca
Code Jam at the UnLab
Google has a programming competition every year called Google Code Jam.
This year some of the members of unlondon led by our own Gavin Blair are planning to partipate. For more info check out the UnLab blog.

First regular open night & floor plan
One item that came out of the first general meeting was a need to get the UnLab space organized to accommodate the the goals of members and potential members. I’ve created a rough floor plan with input from other members that hopefully will address all the requirments. Please feel free to comment on it both here and on the wiki page.
Another item that came up was the need to establish a regular open night. Although we haven’t hashed out a consitent day, for now I’m going to commit myself to being there most Wednesday nights (except when Geek Dinner is on). Tonight will be a bit earlier then usual due to a tour I’m giving to an interested party but in general these will be after 7pm in the evening.
For March 30th I’ll be at the UnLab from 5:30-7:30 and the people at the Convergence Centre have agreed to leave the front doors unlocked so you can get in.
To find the Unlab as you enter the main doors, take the stairs down and then go left. We are the open door on the right. More information can be found on our wiki.
